Whether you’ve taken an extended break from working out or getting started for the first time, it can be intimidating to know where to start. Many people let intimidation keep them from taking the first step.
We want to help you feel empowered to get started on your fitness goals.
Schedule a personal training session or a fitness strategy session. This will help you to understand your body and ensure that you are performing exercises safely and efficiently. A knowledgeable trainer will take into consideration your current fitness level, any past injuries or physical limitations and help you set realistic goals. Working one-on-one with a trainer will help you to feel accountable and more likely to stay motivated.
Don’t set yourself up for disappointment. Set small manageable goals that you can accomplish over time. Even a walk around your neighborhood is a starting point for you to begin to build upon. If you are picturing yourself executing Olympic style heavy lifts during your first workout, you probably aren’t being realistic. Keep in mind that it will be difficult and you will likely want to quit a few times. The important thing is to work through that feeling in order to continue to see progress.
Track Your Progress
You are more likely to stay motivated with a new workout routine when you know that you are getting the results you want. A realistic goal is to aim to lose 1-2 pounds per week which can be accomplished with an efficient workout schedule and balanced diet. While body weight is an easy measurement of success, it might not work for everyone. Other ways to measure success are increased distance, ability to lift heavier weights and the way you feel overall. Find what success means to you and track it every week.
Don’t Let Imperfection Derail You
Make sure that you are realistic with your expectations. No one is perfect all of the time. Many people miss a week of workouts and give up on their goals all together. Or think just because they don’t have enough time for their normal workout that the entire day is wasted. Not the case. Make the most of the time you have. A few missed workouts doesn’t mean the end of your journey. Pick up where you left off and continue to improve.
